How we age

Ageing of the body occurs at a cellular level. Most of the body’s cells continually renew themselves as they wear out. Exact replicas of the old cells are made by a process of cell division. Some parts of body, e.g. skin and digestive tract, cells are constantly sloughed off and replaced by new ones. New cells are formed by mitosis and so are exact copies of the cells being replaced.
As the body ages, the cells begin to deteriorate and function less effectively. The collagen tissues break down, skin loses elasticity, muscles weaken, hair thins and degenerative diseases increase. The breakdown in cells can be caused by faulty replication of cells and lifestyle factors including poor nutrient intake, stress, toxins and disease.

Why we age

The cell replicates over and over according to a plan called the genetic code. The genetic code is controlled by DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and the DNA messenger, RNA (ribonucleic acid) which establishes the genetic pattern throughout the cell biochemically. This genetic code for replicating healthy strong cells is affected by a class of highly corrosive oxidising molecules called “free radicals”. Free radicals initiate the dangerous chemical chain reaction which prevents cells from acting out their normal function and also damage RNA and DNA needed for further cell replication.

Causes of Premature Ageing

The main precipitating causes of free radicals are strong sunlight, air pollution, cigarette smoking ad poor nutrition. When sunlight strikes the skin cells it reacts with oxygen, creating free radicals which in turn damage the cells causing premature ageing. Free radicals and oxidative stress will lead to cytotoxicity. Oxidative stress (as formulated in Harman’s free radical theory of ageing) contributes greatly to the ageing process.

Supplementation of anti-oxidants breaks down and neutralises free radicals.

A high source of intrinsic antioxidants can scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.
